A couple of hours = a couple of paintings

Here's what I got done this afternoon. Sorry the scans of the mountain and water spirit are goofy and two-toned, but the paintings were so big I had to scan them left/right and then splice the images. Alas...
And another pic of good ole mom and dad, as dad readies himself to depart for the battle...I really need to get a hold of a book of Chinese armor. My goal here was for simplified, animatable designs. Sorry I totally copped out by cropping the feet--oops! Well, that's it for today!

Okay, Holden. You've got your job back.

The background design is perfect. Freak. FREAK. One day, I will cut off your hands, eat them, and absorb your talent. Once I've gotten what I need from you.

Really. You're good. It kind of upsets me. That being said...

I think the colors need to be pushed around a bit until we come up with something dull enough. Do you know the work of Edmund Dulac or Arthur Rackham? Check it out.

dulac.artpassions.net

Dulac wins, and I think you'll like his stuff. It all has a muted, washed feel, but not bleached or colorless- it's all really unified. Check out especially Dulac's stuff on Arabian Nights. I'd like to see colors like THAT on our backgrouns, and maybe in the piece as a whole.

THAT IS NOT A CRITICISM against your work. I adore your painting. I want to make that clear, not because I'm afraid of offending, but because that, sir is really good work.

But check out Dulac. Tell me what you think.

Check out Dulac's work on the Nightingale, too. It's on the same site. You're gonna LOVE it.

I loved the site. I see what you mean about Dulac's use of color, and I definitely want a more unified, muted look to the backgrounds. In my defense, the painting looks a little different in person...(Incidentally what do you think of the barren browns/reds at the bottom vs. the lush greens at the top? Is that too obvious for representing class stratification?)
Also, I want to keep things simple--while I think it's a good idea to mimic Dulac's color scheme, I don't want to over-saturate backgrounds. The key to the sumii-e look is simplicity (but you already knew that).
Oh, and sorry that my water spirit looks like a retarded pokemon. I'll fix that.

wow, what you guys said just now cleared up a whole post of what I was confused about on backgrounds. That and I like your Background, Holden, the mountian looks great.

Your work, sir, needed no defense. I think it looks GREAT. As you pointed out, the water spirit was a bit on the Ash & Mindy side, but still well done. Anyway, have you seen my 'conehead' master design? C'mon. Getting to the point, I'm glad you dig on Dulac, and I'm glad you'se keepin' it simple... and keepin' it real.
